Kindergarten Lesson Plans

Construct stimulating kindergarten lesson plans that support the expectations for the year. Discover great ideas, tools, activities, and crafts to educate your child in all subject areas.

Welcome to the website for everything you need to find and create activities to fulfill standard grade level expectations.  Both parents and teachers should learn these expectations and work together in educating the children.  Parents, you will learn ways you can help prepare your children for kindergarten as well as help them succeed during the year throughout these pages.

The benchmarks for every child to learn during the school year vary slightly from state to state, but most of the elements are the same.  Kindergarten lesson plans should revolve around language arts, mathematics, history (or social sciences), science and  physical education.   It is also beneficial to have the recommended books for all of these skills.

Art projects are a fun and active way for children to learn different concepts.  Visit my Crafts page to find ideas for art projects for school and home, and resources for the materials they require.

Kindergarten Learning Standards

Kindergarten lesson plans for language arts should focus on teaching students about the alphabet: letters, sounds, sight words and simple sentences.  In this category, there are also skills such as rhyming, counting syllables, using descriptive words and writing words and short sentences before they enter 1st grade.  Instruction should also promote reading comprehension by challenging students to come up with their own questions as well as respond to them, and make predictions about the content of the story.   Feel free to take a look at my sight words and language arts pages for ideas for kindergarten lesson plans and activities in these areas.  I also have compiled a great collection of Recommended Books for this curriculum.  I have tried to note the specific standard and skills each book addresses so you can get exactly what you need.
In the Mathematics category, simple shapes, patterns and small numbers should be taught throughout kindergarten.  Lesson plans should also cover sorting (by similarities), describing (eg. color), comparing (eg. which is longer or lighter) and counting objects.  The calendar and other concepts of time should also be learned in kindergarten.

Lesson plans for history, or social science, should encourage the development of characteristics like fairness, leadership, responsibility and respect (being a ‘good citizen’).   Activities should also demonstrate how life long ago was different from our lives today.

Science involves learning the characteristics of different plants and animals, and discovering the different landforms (mountains, etc) and kinds of weather.  Kindergarten lesson plans should also teach children how to use their 5 senses to learn about materials around us.  On my Science page, you will find ideas for themes, corresponding books and other materials and toys to make the kindergarten lesson plans more fun.

Physical education is also extremely important in kindergarten.  Lesson plans for this category are valuable and advocate the strengthening of specific skills.  Traveling fast and slow, jumping, throwing, kicking and balancing are only some of the skills covered in kindergarten.  Lesson plans should also promote:  stretching; meanings of words such as over, under, next to, backward, etc.; the importance of water and nutritious food; and the dynamics of social interactions.

All kindergarten lesson plans should have an introduction, a demonstration and follow-up activity or discussion.

THIS website has many ideas for kindergarten lesson plans that foster the development and retention of this curriculum.  There are ideas, and links for creating your own worksheets.   I also have started a collection for year-round crafts, and winter crafts.  Throughout the site you will also find a list of some great educational materials and tools that kids enjoy.
